Fade Into Fantasy hosted Rebecca Roland on Friday. She discussed where inspiration comes from — for her it’s often tied with setting. Her home in New Mexico and the surrounding geology, particularly the the Valles Caldera, a volcanic caldera in northern New Mexico, were essential in building the world of Shards of History. 

Rebecca Roland writes: I often draw inspiration for my fictional worlds from places where I’ve lived or traveled. I live in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, and the state is brimming with fascinating places, from forests and mountains to desert to White Sands National Monument and Tent Rocks National Monument. Ruins and petroglyphs of ancient people can be found all over. New Mexico might have been a state for only a century, but many parts of it feel ancient. I suppose that’s why I think it makes an excellent setting for fantasy and horror. Read more…

Live to Read asked Rebecca Roland to share what her writing process is like. She goes on to explain that having the first trimester of her pregnancy riddled with devastating morning sickness turned out to be a blessing in disguise in terms of building a unique and full world.

Rebecca Roland writes: There is no single right or wrong way, just the way that works best for any individual. It’s a process, figuring out which method works best. I’ve tried several methods in pinning down what works best for me, and I’m actually still trying to figure it out.

My novel Shards of History began as a short story. When I decided to lengthen it, I had only the faintest idea of how it would end and what would happen in the middle. I just sat down one day and started writing. That wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had. Read more…
